Where History Is Hands-On

Opened in 1990, Vermilionville is a living history museum and folklife park, whose purpose is to preserve and interpret authentic elements of folklife cultures - Acadian, Native Americans, Creole & African descent - located in the Attakapas area between 1765 and 1890. The celebration of these cultures includes language; music and dance; the performance of traditional arts; artifacts; landscaping; architecture; historic costuming; beliefs and customs; cuisine; and traditional holidays and festivals. Vermilionville seeks to enlighten visitors about the history and culture of Acadiana and to help ethnic groups of this area gain a better understanding and appreciation of their own cultures and those of others in this multi-ethnic region.
The park sits on a 23-acre site on the banks of the Bayou Vermilion with 19 attractions, including seven restored original homes with artisans that provide demonstrations, daily, on a variety of essential crafts performed by the early settlers.

Vermilionville is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please keep in mind that we stop taking admission at 3:00 p.m. daily as it takes approximately an hour to an hour and thirty minutes to tour our historic village. Our historic village is closed on Mondays and for major holidays including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, Mardi Gras Day, Thanksgiving,  Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
